On Friday, MP’s in the UK will have an opportunity to debate and vote on the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill.
Despite the often strident positions some religious groups have taken, it’s important to remember that religious views on this issue are actually diverse and nuanced. In fact, some recent surveys show that a majority of ordinary people of faith broadly support the bill.
Like it or not, the Bible does not clearly define for us the margins of life – where it begins or where exactly it ends. The theological debate is not settled either, despite the “strongly held views” on both sides.
As a person of faith then, it’s ok to have your own view and to allow space for nuance, complexity and individual conscience along the way. May we treat everyone – especially the vulnerable and the suffering – with compassion, respect and the moral agency their personhood deserves.
